The 22nd Annual Woltz-Harold Surry Community College Foundation Golf Tournament successfully moved from the monsoon season of mid-May to a sun-filled, perfect golf day on June 7.

Tournament sponsorships, ticket sales, registration, mulligans, and Driving for Dollars sponsored by the College golf team netted $70,000 for student scholarships, right on track with previous year’s events.

The highlight of the day was a hole-in-one on #14 by Chase Wright of Mount Airy. He won a Toro Z Mower and a $500 VISA gift card sponsored by Price Power Equipment of Elkin. Chase was on the Mountain River/Dude Smith Trucking team with Casey Wright, his brother; Timmy Wright, his uncle and Tim Hodock with Fitzgerald Peterbilt of Fancy Gap. This was only the second hole-in-one in the 22-year history of the tournament.

Two hundred golfers descended on Cross Creek Country Club to tee off for the 8 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. rounds. More than 50 volunteers including community partners, State Employee Credit Union staff, SCC employees, board members, and retirees worked tirelessly to ensure that golfers had good food, good golf and a good time. The tournament honors past SCC Foundation Board of Director’s members, Pat Woltz and Bobby Harold, who personally endowed scholarships for students and volunteered annually for the golf tournament.

Tournament winners do not receive prizes. Instead, a scholarship is awarded to a student in the name of team for the 2018-2019 school year. This year’s winning teams for the morning round were:  First Place: Cross Creek Flight – Sowers Construction; Pebble Beach Flight – Rogers Realty; and St. Andrews Flight – First Citizens Bank. Second Place: Cross Creek Flight – Central Continuing Care; Pebble Beach Flight – Thermo King Central Carolinas; and St. Andrews Flight – Unifi, Inc.

Afternoon round winning teams were: First Place: Cross Creek Flight – Carolina Mutual Insurance; Pebble Beach Flight – WLA Trucking; and St. Andrews Flight – Scenic Automotive Group.  Second Place: Cross Creek Flight – Eagle Storage of Pilot Mountain; Pebble Beach Flight – Utility Trailer Sales; and St. Andrews Flight – G&B Energy.

Other contest winners were: Longest Drive: morning round - Ronnie Forest and Patty Carpenter and afternoon round - Alan Connolly and Kim Webb; Closest to Pin: morning round – Keith Dillon, Lenny Beerbhajan, Donald Davis, Dennis Joyner and afternoon round - Chase Wright, Coy Hall, David Hocker, and Jerry Taylor.

Golf Committee members included: Jerry Venable, Gary Harold, Susan Thomas, Peggy Rees, Becky Money, Ann Vaughn, Swanson Richards, Dr. David Shockley, Marion Venable, and most importantly Alice Connolly, whose expertise in all things golf, helped define rules, guide a team of “golf game” volunteers and made it possible for golfers to find their assigned carts and begin their golf game in amazingly smooth fashion. Scholarship recipients from the 2017 tournament joined golfers for a delicious lunch at the Club pavilion. Golfers enjoyed meeting students who had benefited from their participation in last year’s event.

Lead sponsors for the event were Woltz and Associates, H&W Trucking, Dr. and Mrs. James A. Harrell, Jr. and Alvarez Truck Brokers of Ocala, FL, Inc. A special thank you is due to the SCC Foundation Board of Directors and the SCC Board of Trustees for their unwavering support for projects and events that benefit Surry students.

The day ended with a buffet dinner for golfers and volunteers who came together to celebrate a huge success for current and future Surry students.
