National Board Certification: Tips for Teachers Course Offered

Surry Community College is offering a National Board Certification: Tips for Teachers course beginning February 21 and ending March 20. The 24-hour class will meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 4:30pm to 7:30pm at the Pilot Center of SCC. This course, taught by Dr. Annette Ayers, is an overview of National Board Certification with tips on how to successfully navigate through the process.

National Board Certification, offered by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), is a credential which recognizes accomplished teachers. Teachers who have participated in National Board Certification have overwhelmingly stated it is the most powerful professional development experience of their careers. They relate that the experience changes them as professionals and that through the process they deepen their content knowledge and develop, master, and reflect on new approaches to working with their students.

Terry Collins, National Board Certified teacher with Surry County Schools says, "Being named as a National Board Certified teacher is an honor, but the winding path to this recognition does not have to be strictly a solo journey. Dr. Annette Ayers offers important tips and advice to creating superior National Board portfolio materials, along with what one can expect at the assessment testing center. I've heard it said that undergoing the National Board process cannot make a bad teacher good, but it can make a good teacher great. Dr. Ayers is one of the greats, and her insights were invaluable in helping me to be a successful candidate. I recommend the class without hesitation to any teacher, regardless of grade level or subject, who wants to be a National Board certified educator."
