Surry Defeats Piedmont in Dig Pink Game

For the second consecutive year, Surry captured their “Dig Pink” volleyball game defeating Piedmont College, 3-0 on Tuesday evening.  The event was held in honor of breast cancer awareness and raised over $500.00 for breast cancer research for the Side Out Foundation

The Lady Knights honored several breast cancer survivors prior to the start of the game, and also recognized four sophomores playing their final home game.  Taylor Moxley, Tori Nelson, Amber Owens, and Alyssa Parker were all honored by Surry coach Jan Marion-Kiser and their teammates.

Following the National Anthem performed by Shoals Elementary School second graders, Emma Brown and Hadly Tucker, the Lady Knights opened the first set defeating Piedmont, 25-9.  In the second set, Surry lead 15-14 before reeling off six consecutive points behind the serving of Summer Robertson to finish off the Conquerors, 25-15.  In the third set, Surry built a 17-10 lead before capturing the set, 25-17.

Surry was led offensively by Brittany Tolbert with twelve kills while Sara Parker and Summer Robertson each recorded ten kills.  Amber Owens added seven kills for the Lady Knights.  Kara Hodges notched 46 assists while also adding two kills and five digs.  Taylor Moxley and Summer Robertson led the Lady Knights with five aces each.  Defensively, Moxley led Surry with 24 digs while Sara Parker added twenty digs.  Both Tori Nelson and Alyssa Parker added ten kills each.

“This was an incredible event, and a lot of fun,” stated Surry coach Jan Marion-Kiser.  “These girls worked to raise over $500.00 for breast cancer research and awareness.  We had a great crowd, gave away some wonderful door prizes, and had a lot of pink in our gym.  We certainly want to thank all of our “Dig Pink” sponsors.”

“We had a remarkable evening by honoring several cancer survivors in our community and helping to raise cancer awareness and funding.” added Marion-Kiser.  “I am extremely proud of all these girls.  What they did this evening along with all the volunteers was amazing.  I also want to commend Piedmont College and Coach (Phil) Franklin.  Their support of this event was truly appreciated by our players and fans.  They have a lot of class and battled us the entire match.”

Surry moves to 22-3 on the season while Piedmont College falls to 10-18.  The Lady Knights return to action on Saturday traveling to Lenoir Community College for a tri-match with the Lancers and Cape Fear Community College.  Surry plays Lenoir at 10:00 a.m. before taking on Cape Fear at 12:00 p.m.
