Nursing Students Honored

Nursing students in the final semester of their Associate Degree program were honored on Monday during a luncheon provided by Carolina Donor Services for their humanitarian efforts with the Excellence Award as the 2009 Campus Challenge Winners.

These Surry Community College students were given a challenge of meeting the previous record set by a school for recruiting at least 21 organ donors. During the two day event these nursing students not only met the previous record, but also set the bar extremely high with their new record of 1,016 organ donors recruited.

Beth Hinesley, Community Relations Coordinator for Carolina Donor Services, was astounded at the number of organ donors the students were able to attract. During the luncheon, a presentation on the impact that organ donation has on families was provided by Ms. Hinesley, along with Dawn Hall, Director of Communications for Carolina Donor Services, and Jan Frye-Hill, Friend for Life Volunteer with Carolina Donor Services.

Ms. Frye-Hill's husband was an organ donor and her mother is an organ recipient. Therefore, she knows first-hand the impact the actions of these students will have.

Surry Community College is extremely proud of these upcoming graduates and of their community involvement which speaks highly of their dedication not only to nursing, but also to their community.
