Tanya Davis Key

From SCC Student to Teacher of the Year

Tanya Davis Key graduated from Surry Community College in 1999 with an Associate's in Arts. She continued her studies on campus with Lees-McRae College where she obtained her B.S. in Elementary Education. Her fondest memory is the patience and help she received from her biology instructor. "I had been a struggling student in high school, and didn't have the foundation I needed for that class," states Mrs. Key. "I credit his help and encouragement for the reason I passed that class, and to turning my fear into a love of learning." Mrs. Key now works for Surry County Schools as a teacher where she was most recently honored as Surry County School System's Teacher of the Year. "I feel so fortunate that Surry's on-campus four-year Bachelor's degree completion program enabled me to complete my Bachelor's degree so close to home. As an educator, I am proud to know that our students have a high-quality community college that is affordable and accessible to them when it comes time for them to consider their career goals." She still attends classes and sessions at SCC to earn continuing education credits as needed as a Public School Educator.
