Success Story
Joe A. Reid
Joe A. Reid

“Surry Community College provided me the opportunity to complete two years of college locally while maintaining a full-time job before transferring to Appalachian State University. Surry Community was my rock, my foundation which prepared me academically and socially for the years to follow.”

Mr. Joe A. Reid attended Surry Community College for two years from 1969-1971. He transferred those classes to Appalachian State University, where he obtained his Bachelor's of Science degree in business and a double-minor in psychology and sociology. He is a Past President of the ASU Alumni Council and received the ASU Outstanding Service Award in 1994.
“Surry Community College afforded me the opportunity to work and attend college during a transitional period time in my life. If it weren't for Surry, it's hard to say if I would have had the same opportunities to attend a four-year college. But I do know it made a huge difference in my life." Mr. Reid also commended the faculty and the administration on the excellent individual instruction and support he received while attending Surry. After college, Mr. Reid began his 28-year career with Pike Electric where he developed and managed their inventory control system. He later became Director of Information Technology and was responsible for the management of the IT area and staff for the balance of his career before retiring in 2005. Mr. Reid continues to be involved in Surry Community College and is currently serving his second term as Chairman of the Surry Community College Foundation and enjoys a part-time instructor position in the computer Department at Surry. He was also honored in 1993 as an Outstanding Alumnus of Surry Community College.
