Success Story

Carmen Eldridge

Surry Community College provided me an opportunity to attend college at night while I worked full time and cared for my family. Working in the court system for years helped me decide to study criminal justice and transfer into the GOAL program at Gardner Webb University, where I earned a bachelor of sciences degree in human services. I saw an ad in the newspaper for an Instructor/Recruiter in the Human Resources Development Program (HRD) in the Corporate and Continuing Education Department at Surry and I applied for the position. The purpose of the HRD program is to educate and train people in transition and the emerging workforce for success in the workforce. We all have life changing events that happen to us but the day I was hired at SCC set my life on a different course. It was in 1987 that I took my first night class at SCC. Since then I have completed a Master of Arts degree in higher education administration and educational specialist degree in adult education both through Appalachian State University. Most of my time is spent managing the Workforce Development Center in Mount Airy and as program director for HRD working with the many dislocated workers in the area.
