Physical Therapist Assistant Program
The Developing Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program at Surry Community College was approved by the North Carolina State Board of Community Colleges in May 2007.
The expenses of the program up to this point have been met through the funds in The Allied Health Enhancement Grant, an opportunity through the North Carolina Community College System. The grant was realized through the efforts of Associate Dean of Health Sciences Carol Boles and Health Sciences Coordinator Yvonne Johnson.
The position of Program Director was filled last week by Mr. Casey Vedder, PT, MA. Mr. Vedder comes to Surry from ProHealth in Mt. Airy and has already begun work on the Application for Candidacy from the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). To progress a "developing" program to Candidate for Accrediation takes approximately a 9-month process. The Accreditation status is conferred upon the successful program near graduation date of the first cohort.
Students must graduate from a CAPTE-accredited school to be eligible to sit for the licensing exam. Physical Therapist Assistants must be licensed to practice in North Carolina.
Program Description
The Physical Therapist Assistant curriculum prepares graduates to work in direct patient care settings under the supervision of physical therapists. Assistants work to improve or restore function by alleviation or prevention of physical impairment and perform other essential activities in a physical therapy department.
Course work includes normal human anatomy and physiology, the consequences of disease or injury, and physical therapy treatment of a variety of patient conditions affecting humans throughout the life span.
Graduates may be eligible to take the licensure examination administered by the NC Board of Physical Therapy Examiners. Employment is available in general hospitals, rehabilitation centers, extended care facilities, specialty hospitals, home health agencies, private clinics, and public school systems.
Competitive admissions are anticipated for an intense program that leads to an intensely-satisfying career. The program will accept a maximum of 16 students in mid-2008 and will graduate the first class in 2010. Presently, students lacking only major PTA coursework may apply through Surry Community College (SCC) and through Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) for the collaborative 1 + 1 program at GTCC. Prospective students are encouraged to begin taking related course work in preparation for the 2-year program at SCC.
