Ceramics and Online Graphic Design Classes Offered this Fall!

This fall there are two new options at SCC for artists: ceramic classes and online graphic design classes. Connie Wolfe, Dean of Arts & Sciences, said that Ceramics 1 “has no pre-requisite and you do not have to be an art major or in any specific program to take this course. All are welcome to enroll.”

The Ceramic Studio, a newly renovated space on the SCC campus in Dobson, is a state of the art facility with some of the finest new equipment available, according to Richard Montgomery. He is the coordinator for the Associate in Fine Arts program at SCC and will teach the ceramics classes.

Montgomery has two degrees in Ceramics - a BFA from Louisiana State University and an MFA from Indiana University. He has been active in the art world for 30 years and brings over 15 years of teaching experience to Surry. “Whether wheel throwing vessel objects such as cups and bowls or hand building figurative sculpture, there is no doubt that the Clay Arts are a fulfilling field of study and occupation” Montgomery mused.

The second new option for visual artists is a graphic design certificate. “Can I take these classes online? I work 8 to 5 and just can’t get to daytime classes” is the frequent lament heard by Susan MacLeod, the Graphic Design program coordinator at SCC. Now the answer to that question is “Yes!”

Starting in the Fall 2007 semester, students can take a series of six online classes, over the course of a year, resulting in a certificate in Graphic Design. Students will learn how to layout various graphic design pieces such as logos, advertising and brochures using Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.

SCC has multiple options to meet the needs of both life-long learners and students preparing for a career in the visual arts. Classes are offered on a fist come, first serve basis. Fall 2007 classes begin Aug. 20th.
