Note: One of the guides described on this website describes a five-paragraph essay called "The Keyhole Essay," which is an essay comprised of three main points. Your English instructor at Surry acknowedge that while an essay occasionally may consist of three main points, and while an essay should always contain an introduction and conclusion, following such a strict outline can stifle the development of ideas. The essays you write in college will be more complex and in-depth than the three-paragraph paper.
