A comprehensive testing program is now available to assist college students with assessing educational goals and achievements. The Testing Center administers the college placement tests (Accuplacer) and assists students who are taking Distance Education courses. The Testing Center is located in the A-building room 204.
All students applying for a program at Surry, unless determined to be exempt, are required to take the Accuplacer, a series of un-timed, computerized tests. Testing time will vary based upon student ability and experience in reading comprehension, sentence skills, arithmetic, elementary algebra, and college level mathematics. These tests are designed to help you identify your present strengths and build a solid plan for success.
Testing is available year round.
Off Campus Testing will be scheduled through area high school counselors.
You can take the test only one time. Test scores are valid for three years. Individuals not meeting the test score requirements may make up the deficiencies through completion of prescribed developmental courses.
If you have a special need (permanent or temporary) that will affect you taking the test under standard conditions, you should inform the testing coordinator before taking the test. Reasonable accommodations will be provided.
Note: If the college is closed because of inclement weather, no testing will be given on that day. Check the SCC catalog for any holiday closings or schedule changes that may effect testing. Call Student Development at 386-3443 for further information.

Note: This website describes a five-paragraph essay called "The Keyhole Essay," which is an essay comprised of three main points. Your English instructors at Surry Community College acknowledge that while an essay occasionally may consist of three main points, and while an essay should always contain an introduction and conclusion, following such a strict outline can stifle the development of ideas. The essays you write in college will be more complex and in-depth that the five-paragraph paper.
