Personal Enrichment
Are you ready to take a class for the pure joy of learning a new skill or hobby? Do you need to add balance to your hectic work week? A variety of non-vocational classes are offered through Corporate & Continuing Education providing opportunities for lifelong learning experiences. Research shows that adults who stay mentally and socially engaged live longer, healthier lives!
Reasons you should take an Arts, Crafts, Culinary, Dance/Recreation, or Photography class:

Personal Enrichment classes are offered at various locations throughout Surry and Yadkin counties.

Express yourself through a variety of artistic mediums:
- Decorative Acrylic Painting
This course teaches techniques and tools needed to achieve different applications in acrylic painting. Several pieces will be completed on different surfaces. Students are introduced to supplies and caring for brushes, to tracing and transferring of patterns to surface, and to protecting finished pieces. Class is offered on the Dobson campus.
- Oil Painting
Students are introduced to art materials and supplies and given individual instruction to start an oil painting. Students learn to care for art supplies, to mix oil paint colors, and to layer colors. Classes are taught in Pilot Mountain.
- Stained Glass
Using a template, students will create stained glass projects. Techniques of cutting, grinding, and soldering glass will be covered. Class is offered in Mount Airy. Not on the schedule for fall 2011.
- Mosaics
Using stained glass and other objects, such as rocks, students will create projects ranging from beginner's level to more advanced. Class is taught at the Workforce Development Center in Mount Airy. Not on the schedule for fall 2011.
Choose one of these craft classes and learn a new hobby:
- Basketweaving
Students will be instructed in basic basketry techniques and will create a basic basket. Upon completion, students will be introduced to more advanced basket projects and guided through the process to completion. Classes are offered in Pilot Mountain at the Ed Armfield Center and Mount Airy at the Workforce Development Center.
- Quilting
Three different styles of quilting are covered: traditional, machine, and lap. We will cover design, color, fabric, selection, creation of original patterns and templates, construction of the quilt blocks, to the final stages of completion. Class is offered in Mount Airy at the Workforce Development Center.
- Sewing
Learn to express oneself creatively through sewing. Students will learn to operate a sewing machine with ease, to select proper pattern size, and to consider selections of fabrics. Students will complete a simple garment from a pattern during the class. The experienced seamstress will be challenged to attempt sewing projects that include new techniques.
The course includes information on new fabrics, techniques, and the latest sewing aids and equipment on the market. Fitting techniques and the finer points of seam finishes, fasteners, etc. will be stressed. Class is offered in Mount Airy at the Workforce Development Center.
Do you need to gain a little confidence in the kitchen? We offer recreational culinary classes to help you do just that! Choose a class and let's get cooking!
- Cake Decorating
If learning to decorate cakes is what you're looking for, look no further. Our classes, taught by professional cake decorators, will sweeten your baking skills. Our class includes skills in making flowers to decorating wedding cakes. Classes are offered in Pilot Mountain (Charles Stone Library) and Yadkinville (SCC Yadkin Center).
It's time to get your body moving with one of our dance classes! If you want to hit the dance floor at social engagements, have lots of fun, and get an aerobic workout, our classes are for you.
- Ballroom
We offer both beginners and non-beginners classes. Dances may include cha-cha, merengue, waltz, fox trot, swing, salsa, and more. Partners are recommended, but not required. Classes are taught in Mount Airy at the Jones Family Resource Center and in Pilot Mountain at the SCC Pilot Center.
- Line Dance
Line dance is a choreographed dance with a repeated sequence of steps in which a group of people dance in one or more lines or rows. Students will learn the latest line dances, as well as, the oldie-goldies! Class is offered in the Dobson campus gym. Not on the schedule for fall 2011.
Today’s photography has many uses in business, science, art, and pleasure. Our classes will help students learn how to control and to operate the camera to take better photos.
- Basic/Intermediate Digital Photography -
This class introduces the student to the proper techniques needed to take portrait, landscape, and still life photographs. Basic camera operations will be covered, as well as, some editing of photos. Class is offered on campus in Dobson.
- Photoshop -
This course will introduce the student to Photoshop CS3 and the features available with the program. You will learn how to manipulate photos, combine images, and cut out images. Students should have taken Basic Digital Photography or be an experienced digital camera user. Class is offered on campus in Dobson.
