Need a career change? How about an exciting job? Maybe you should consider attending Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) at Surry community College. Basic Law Enforcement Training is designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge and essential skills to function as a certified law enforcement officer with state, county, municipal agencies, or private enterprise.

Surry Community College is accredited to offer Basic Law Enforcement Training and other Commission Mandated Training as approved by North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards and North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Trainings Standard Commission.

Detention Officer Certification Course

165 Hours

Course is for all persons seeking employment/certification as detention officers at local confinement facilities, county jails, or regional/district confinement facilities.

  • Trains student to function as an experienced detention officer
  • Days classes run Monday through Friday from 8:00am-5:00pm
  • North Carolina State Detention Officer Certification exam administered on the last day of class
  • Governed by the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission and the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission

Speed Measurement Training

Surry Community College offers speed measurement courses governed by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.

Courses offered:

Radar Operator Certification 40 hours
Radar Operator Recertification 16 hours
Lidar Operator Certification 16 hours
Radar/VASCAR/ Lidar Recertification 16 hours
Radar/Lidar Recertification 16 hours

Only employed, sworn, certified law enforcement personnel shall be enrolled in these courses.

In-Service Law Enforcement Training

The in-service Law Enforcement Training program at SCC provides numerous courses for the continuing education of law enforcement officers. Law enforcement training courses have been designed for upgrading both experienced and recently employed policemen and law enforcement officials. The development of these courses is based upon the needs and interests of the criminal justice and law enforcement community. Courses which meet annual criminal justice certification requirements are also offered.

Training is offered at no cost to law enforcement officers in areas to include, but not limited to:

  • Radar operator certification
  • Firearms training
  • Driver training
  • Investigations
  • Community-oriented policing
  • Field training officer
  • Criminal Justice in-service requirements
  • OC pepper spray certification
  • Report writing
  • Interview and interrogation
  • Other assorted law enforcement training upon request
