Prerequisites: Each student must take a reading proficiency test and score a minimum scale score of 562 on the reading section of the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) prior to registering. The reading test must be completed by November 30th in order to register on December 3rd. You will be notified at the time of testing if you have met the reading proficiency. For your convenience, the TABE test may be taken at any of the Learning Centers. Basic white uniforms are required for clinicals. |

Basic and Advanced Medical Transcription (Hybrid)
48 hours
This is an entry level class that prepares the individual to transcribe medical dictation. Students will use keyboarding skills and medical terminology. Students may find jobs in hospitals, physician practices, insurance companies and private transcription agencies. Two years of work experience as a transcriptionist is required for certification.
Prerequisites: Medical Terminology, excellent keyboarding skills, and a good working knowledge of English grammar and punctuation. Please bring verification of your Medical Terminology course to registration (example: college transcript).
Registration will be held in the classroom on the first night of class.
The cost of tuition is $122.00.
Basic Procedure and Diagnosis Coding (Hybrid)
48 hours
Basic Procedure and Diagnosis Coding prepares an individual to locate and assign codes specific to diagnoses, services, and durable medical equipment. Emphasis is placed on learning to use the ICD9, CPT, and HCPCS coding books. Course instruction includes theory and practical exercises to reinforce learning.
Prerequisite: Medical Terminology
Registration will be held in the classroom on the first night of class.

Intermediate Procedure and Diagnosis Coding (Hybrid)
48 hours
This course is designed to build upon the student's knowledge and skills gained in basic ICD and CPT coding. Computerized encoding will be introduced. Course instruction includes theory and practical exercises to reinforce student learning.
Prerequisite: Basic Procedure and Diagnosis Coding
Registration will be held in the classroom on the first night of class.
The cost of tuition is $122.00.
Front Office Skills for the Medical Profession (Hybrid)
60 hours
This course provides training for a medical office assistant. Course topics may include, but are not limited to, preparation of medical records, health insurance, and handling front office operations.
Prerequisite: Medical Terminology
Registration will be held in the classroom on the first night of class.

Health Unit Coordinator
130 hours
This course is designed to prepare the student to work as a Unit Secretary or a Hospital Ward Clerk in either a hospital or nursing home. The student is trained to keep and maintain clerical items and patient records. Scheduling, telephone techniques, receptionist duties and the intercom system will be covered. Students will attend clinical as part of this course. Clinical hours are part of the total 130 hours.
Prerequisite: Medical Terminology or CNA I

Healthcare Billing and Reimbursement (Hybrid)
60 hours
This course prepares an individual for entry level healthcare and billing positions. Course topics include, but are not limited to, roles and responsibilities, managed care, total billing cycle, legal and regulatory considerations, coding regulations, compliance issues, reimbursement issues, insurance forms, filing commercial insurance claims, and major insurance providers.
Prerequisite: None. Medical Terminology suggested.

Medical Terminology (Hybrid)
96 hours
Medical Terminology introduces prefixes, suffixes, and word roots used in the language of medicine. Topics include medical vocabulary and the terms that relate to the anatomy and physiology, pathological conditions, and treatment of selected systems. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to pronounce or locate the correct pronunciation for terms, spell, and define medical terms as related to selected body systems and their pathological disorders.
Prerequisite: None.
Registration will be held in the classroom on the first night of class.

The Nursing Assistant I student is prepared to provide personal care and perform basic nursing skills for the elderly and other adults. Emphasis is placed on :
- The aging process
- Patient's rights
- Nutrition
- Safety and Infection Control Procedures
- Restorative care
- Structure and function of the human body, diseases and functions
- Communication/documentation
- Death and dying process
- Role of the Nursing Assistant
- CPR
Upon satisfactory completion of the CNA I course and the skills/competency evaluation, the student will be listed on the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation (DHSR) Nurse Aide I Registry.
Prerequisites: Each student must take a reading proficiency test prior to registration. This test may be taken at any of the learning centers at no cost to the student.

The Nursing Assistant II course prepares the student to perform more complex skills for patients or residents. Emphasis is placed on :
- Oxygen Therapy
- Sterile Technique
- Wound Care
- Suctioning techniques
- Tracheostomy Care
- IV fluids (specific procedures as approved by the NC Board of Nursing)
- Urinary catheterization and irrigation
- Oral/nasogastric and gastrostomy feeding tubes (specific procedures as approved by the NC Board of Nursing)
- Ostomy care and elimination procedures
Upon satisfactory completion of the CNA II course, the student will be listed with the North Carolina Board of Nursing.

This course prepares students to work under the supervision of a pharmacist in a hospital or pharmacy. Topics covered in the course include drug classification, drug distribution, anatomy and physiology in relationship to disease with an emphasis on drug therapy, and laws and regulations basic to pharmacy practice. Interested student are prepared to sit for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam upon successful completion of this course.
Prerequisites: High School Diploma or GED required to take certification exam.

Phlebotomy Education I (Hybrid)
96 hours
This is the classroom portion of Phlebotomy Education which includes didactic and lab. The course prepares students to take the clinical portion (Phlebotomy II) of the program. This class may be used as a refresher/continuing education of students are already working the the field.
Prerequisites: High school diploma or GED, CNA I & II, CMA or comparable credentials
The cost of tuition is $178.00.
Phlebotomy Education II
100 hours
This is the clinical portion of Phlebotomy Education. The student will go to a designated clinical site and perform learned skills. Each student must have 100 hours of clinical, 100 venipunctures, and 25 skin punctures. Upon satisfactory completion of Phlebotomy I & II, the student may sit for his/her certification exam. Student schedules should be flexible in order to meet clinical requirements.
