SET’s purpose is to analyze and develop strategies to enhance student engagement in academic tasks. Its responsibilities include the following:
In the fall of 2002, Dr. Dwight Atkins, Math Division Chair, was asked to lead SET. After establishing SET’s membership, Dr. Atkins convened the first SET meeting in the winter of 2003. The Team has continued to meet regularly to develop and implement strategies for improving student engagement college-wide. In the Spring of 2004, SET was renamed and re-formed to focus exclusively on critical thinking. The new team is called TACT (Team for the Advancement of Critical Thinking). It is chaired by Dr. Dwight Atkins, Dr. Jami Woods (Dean of Arts & Sciences), and George Snyder (Dean of Career Technologies). Membership consists of the division chairs, two faculty members who served on the original committee (Donna Harbour and Connie Wolfe), and Candace Ring (Director of Distance Education). The team is charged with facilitating on-going professional development related to critical thinking. This includes providing feedback to instructors on critical thinking projects. TACT members will receive extensive training in critical thinking from the Foundation for Critical Thinking and will become SCC's local "experts" in critical thinking.
