Minimum Requirements

All students who plan to enter a four-year university must have met the MCR requirements either in high school or at a community college. Generally, the continued study of language (beyond English) and a strong math curriculum in college are recommended.

Completion of MCR Requirements in High School

You have already met the MCR requirements in high school if you completed ALL of the following requirements.

  1. Completed four units of English.
  2. Completed Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry (or a higher math course for which Algebra II is a prerequisite).
  3. Completed three units of science – one life science, one physical science, and at least one laboratory science.
  4. Completed two units of social sciences – one must have been US History.
  5. Completed two units of the same language other than English.
  6. Students who graduated from high school in May of 2006 will have to have an additional math class that is more advanced than Algebra II (AP Calculus, AP Statistics, Pre-Calculus-- formerly Advanced Math--and Discrete Mathematics, IB Mathematics Level II, Integrated Mathematics IV, Advanced Functions and Modeling (new course)).

If you missed any one of the high school MCR requirements, you must complete the MCR requirements at a community college. If you are deficient in one area, you are considered to be deficient in all areas.

Completion of MCR Requirements at a Community College

There are three ways to complete the MCR requirements at a community college.

  1. Complete six semester hours of college-level work in EACH (a-e) of the following areas (total of 30-32 SHC):
    1. English (ENG 111 and either ENG 112 or ENG 113)
    2. Math (two General Education math courses; must have MAT prefix)
    3. Science (two General Education science courses)
    4. Social Sciences (two General Education social sciences courses)
    5. Language other than English (two semesters of the same language)
  2. Complete the 44 semester hour General Education core of the Associate in Arts or the Associate in Science degrees.
  3. Complete the Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, or the Associate in Fine Arts degrees. Two semesters of the same language other than English are strongly recommended.
