Pursue Your Interests with Enrichment Classes Offered by SCC
Dobson, NC – The Corporate and Continuing Education Division of Surry Community College has a jam-packed line up of fun and interesting classes, which start in February.
Beginning Cake Decorating is the perfect class for the beginning cake decorator. Students will learn new techniques each week on cake and icing recipes, tools of the trade, and basic decorating designs. The class meets on Mondays at The Yadkin Center from Feb. 3 to March 24, from 6 to 9 p.m. The cost is $66.
In the Decorative Acrylic Painting class, you can create decorative accessories for your home and for gifts using easy cleanup acrylic paints. The class meets on Mondays at Surry Community College in J-215 in Dobson from Feb. 3 to March 24, from 6 to 9 p.m. The cost is $66.
Quilts, always a beloved symbol of comfort, family, heritage and community, have taken a new twist in SCC’s Barn Quilt class. A barn quilt will provide wonderful visual art for your barn or building. Traditional quilt patterns will be painted on pre-built wooden squares. All materials will be supplied for this class. The class size is limited to six students. Barn Quilts will be offered Friday, Feb. 7, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Elkin Center in Room 105. Students may make a 2-foot by 2-foot, 3-foot by 3-foot, or 4-foot by 4-foot barn quilt, and the costs are $125, $200, and $225 respectively.
A Quilting for Beginners class will be offered at The Elkin Center and The Pilot Center in February. Classes at The Pilot Center will meet on Tuesdays, Feb. 4 to March 25, from 2 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. These beginning quilters will create and hand quilt a six-block quilt using cutting, layering, and quilting techniques. The cost is $66. Experienced quilters are welcome and may work on a quilt pattern of their choice.
Beginning quilter classes at The Elkin Center meets on Mondays, Feb. 3 to April 7, from 6 to 9 p.m. Students will learn rotary cutting of fabric; design and block construction; quilt layering and hand quilting; creating binding and quilt label making. The cost is $70.
The Stained Glass course teaches techniques and tools for creating traditional copper foil stained glass designs as well as other techniques as time allows. The class will take place on Tuesdays, Feb. 4 to March 25, from 6 to 9 p.m. at The Center for Public Safety in Mount Airy. The class cost is $66.
Stained glass students will be guided through the process of fabricating stained glass projects and can choose from a variety of patterns and projects including mosaics, traditional glass panels, lanterns and clocks. This course is designed for beginners as well as the experienced. This is a working class, so come prepared to have fun making projects that you can take home and enjoy. The Pinterest Inspired Craft Class is being offered on Tuesday, Feb. 4 and Tuesday, Feb. 11, at The Pilot Center from 6 to 9 p.m. This class is for people who want to complete Pinterest-inspired projects, but need a little guidance in making them.
A photography class, Natural Lighting and Posing the Human Body, will be offered Tuesdays, Feb. 18 to March 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Pilot Center. The class has a prerequisite of the DSLR camera class or working knowledge of DSLR manual settings.
Beginning Bonsai is the Oriental art of creating miniature trees. In your first venture into bonsai, you will learn the techniques of the art and the importance of harmony of heart, mind and hand. The class meets Tuesday, Feb. 11, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Surry Community College’s Dobson campus in room M105.
