Junior / Cadet Members
Students over the age of 16 and under the age of 18 may enroll and participate in classes through the Fire and Rescue Division ONLY if they have a completed Student Release Form on file at Surry Community College. This form must be completed and submitted at the beginning of each college semester. Junior / Cadet members and their departments should ensure that these persons complete and submit this form by January 1, May 16, and August 15 of each year that they wish to enroll in Fire and Rescue Division course offerings. No student under the age of 16 may enroll or participate in any course offered through the Fire and Rescue Division.
Acquired Structural Burns
It is Surry Community College's policy to arrange and coordinate the testing of structures donated to fire departments in our delivery area for asbestos as required by law. This will only be done after a Property Release and Asbestos Testing Agreement have been signed, notarized and returned to the Fire and Rescue Division Office. Once these documents have been received by Surry Community College it generally takes 30 to 45 days to perform the testing and complete all associated paperwork before the structure can be used for training. Junior / Cadet members are NOT allowed to make interior fire attacks or conduct vertical ventilation activities on acquired structures.
***The removal of any materials containing asbestos is the responsibility of the property owner. Surry Community College in no way agrees to perform abatement of asbestos containing materials.***
Policy for Testing
Surry Community College Fire and Rescue Division conducts all certification tests in accordance with the North Carolina Fire and Rescue Commission Policy for Testing. A Simplified Testing Policy is available which summarizes the main points of this policy. To be eligible to test, students must register BEFORE 10% of the class time has passed and MUST attend 80% of the entire class.
