Placement Testing
During peak periods (especially midterms and finals) the Testing Center will experience greater traffic; students might consider checking the availability of their exams and testing hours before coming in. For more information please contact Laura Bracken or Leanne Gardner at (336) 386-3443 or email Laura at brackenl@surry.edu.
College Placement testing is offered in the Testing Center. Accuplacer Online is a comprehensive, computer adaptive placement assessment designed to help professional staff place students in appropriate courses to maximize their success. These tests are not timed. Tutorials are available prior to testing for those students who are unfamiliar with computers.

About Computerized Placement Testing
Degree-seeking students are required to complete placement tests which include the following:
- English (Sentence Skills)
- Reading Comprehension
- Arithmetic
- Algebra
- College Level Math (if necessary)
SCC accepts scores on the Computerized Placement Test.
The Computerized Placement Test (CPT) is easy to use. Computer experience is not needed, and the test is not timed. Tests contain 12 to 20 questions chosen from a group of 120 questions.
Any test score is an estimate, not an exact measure of your skills. The computer selects questions based on your answers to previous questions.
The computer will explain how to record your answer as you work and will have directions on how to use a mouse.
An ID with a picture is required: You should bring appropriate identification with you. This includes your Social Security card and driver's license or picture ID.
You could be exempt from the College Placement Test if you have met minimum SAT scores (500 Writing, 500 Critical Reading, 500 Math) or ACT scores (21 Math, 21 English, 21 Reading) and the scores are not more than 3 years old.

Arrival Time
Testers MUST arrive 2 hours before the Testing Center closes. The college placement tests are not timed. Therefore, if you feel you will need more than 2 hours for the test, adjust your time accordingly.
Testing Availability
Testing is available year round and testing hours are subject to change. Off campus testing will be scheduled through area high school counselors.
Test scores are valid for three years. Individuals not meeting the test score requirement may make up the deficiencies through completion of prescribed developmental courses.
Fees
Starting July 1, 2009, the Testing Center will charge a $2.00 testing fee ($10.00 maximum) for each test unit used. A test unit is Reading Comprehension, English (Sentence Skills), Arithmetic, Algebra or College Math.
This charge applies to first-time testers and re-testers. Students must pay the testing fee immediately after testing is completed to the cashier in the Business Office located on the main floor of the "A" Reeves building on the Dobson campus.
If testing fees are not paid on the day of testing then students will not receive their test scores nor will they be allowed to register for classes.
Special Needs
If you have a special need (permanent or temporary) that will affect your ability to take the test under standard conditions, you should inform the Testing Coordinator in a timely manner before taking the test. Reasonable accommodations will be provided.

Studying for the College Placement Test
We suggest that all students study for the college test (CPT).
All placement test review information is provided as a review only, without any warranty or guarantee that your test scores will improve. Surry Community College takes no responsibility for test scores as a result of using the online study guide or any link to a study guide.
A study guide can be obtained from the Student Development Office or from the Testing Center in the "A" Reeves Building, room 204. No calculators are allowed on the CPT. Pencils and paper will be provided for Arithmetic and Algebra calculations.
Class Placement Based on Test Results
Curriculum students are placed in English, reading and mathematics courses on the basis of placement testing results. This enables students to enroll in these subjects at a point that is aligned with their achievement level as indicated by the placement test scores. Certain course prerequisites may make it necessary for students to enroll in remedial courses which are identified by a numerical "0" prefix (example RED 080, ENG 080).
When to Show Up for Your Test
All placement tests are offered on a walk-in basis. To ensure adequate time for testing, students must be inside the Testing Center at least two hours before closing to start the CPT.
If the college is closed because of inclement weather, no testing will be given on that day. Check the SCC catalog for any holiday closings or schedule changes that may affect testing. Call Student Development at (336) 386-3264 for further information.
Distance Education Testing and Proctoring
Distance Education testing and proctoring is also available in the Testing Center. Students enrolled in any distance education course, for example, Internet, Hybrid, or NC Information Highway can test in the Center.
The Testing Center offers proctoring services to the community and provides service hours to help students achieve their goals successfully. Students should be aware of the length and difficulty of their exams and plan their time wisely. Tests are to be started and finished in one sitting and must be turned in 10 minutes prior to closing.
Service hours may be different during the semester break.
The Testing Center will also be closed for all holidays recognized by Surry Community College and as indicated by inclement weather.
